Getac vs Toughbook, anyone have any thoughts or opinions? I think it might possibly be the Security Configuration Wizard stopping that service. MPeters I knew it wasn't a resources problem as the vms fly once they are logged in, running on hp gen8 server by the way.ĮDIT: What I really need to do now is find out why this is happening on all (or most anyway) of my Server 2012 builds. I still have the issue with the app server not finding the domain ONLY in the application, as I've said it finds the domain fine in other ways, I thought they were linked but maybe not, anyway I'll call them about that. It makes perfect sense now that by there being a problem with the smart card service it could delay login. Thanks so much for pointing me back in that (very basic, I know) direction, I really should know better. I have actually looked at those errors briefly before on a previous server build with the same problem but was assured by someone that the smart card errors were one of those critical errors that are always present in the system log and Microsoft say it doesn't matter, so I overlooked them. I'm guessing I could have set it to take no action in the event of a service failure (or possibly remove smart card from the vm but can't find that option now, pretty sure I've seen it before though) as well but I'm leaving it like this for now until I find out more.

So I started the Windows Driver Foundation service, which then let the Smart Card service start, and the problem is gone.

The smart card service depends on the windows driver foundation - user-mode driver framework service which failed to start.' Margie you'd think I would have learned that lesson well by now but no! So in the system log there were a few of these (at log on times): I cannot produce the same issue(s) on Server 2008 at all and have never run into this on Server 2008 when creating the same environments. I think these problems must be related as the process that is stalling (or delaying) is essentially the same, looking for the domain and passing domain credentials through to the DC. I have seen problems like this before due to the dns server not having itself as the first dns server but all of that seems to be configured correctly (and working correctly in other functions). And if I attempt to add domain users to a local group on the app server, that works fine, it finds the domain and users. Yet the same dialogue box (normal windows dialogue box ((find user, location, etc)) ) never finds the domain when Sophos av is looking for users, it only ever shows the local server as an available location.

I also have the problem where, on the app server, I am trying to install the Sophos AV enterprise console, and at one point it needs to find and use a domain account (which I've previously set up in AD on the DC) and it doesn't seem to be able to find the domain, even though the app server joined the domain fine. The behaviour is the same when RDPing to a VM ('Please wait for a moment' lasts for 4 - 5 minutes until it presents the dialogue to enter credentials). I then enter un and pwd and it brings me back to 'Press ctrl alt del', I do that again and put in the un and pwd and then it logs me in and seems to work perfectly normally. The problem is that when I start up either VM and hit ctrl alt del GUI button (or ctrl Alt End on keyboard) the screen of the server does not present the log in prompt for a while, about 4-5 minutes, and it's a regular interval each time, then it always presents the log in. I can ping the domain dns name from any box. Everything has installed correctly and seems to be working fine, as in, the domain is fine and joinable and seems to be working ok. In this current setup I have a Hyper V host and 2 VMs running in that, one a DC, one an App server.

I've posted about this in a previous thread (same issue but symptoms described slightly differently): but I'll try to explain it again as best I can. I'm thinking it must be something I'm doing. I've been running into this issue repeatedly throughout multiple Server 2012 builds and it's a really big problem for me now.
